Who Processes Our DBS Checks?
CareAdmin uses Access Personal Checking Services (APCS), one of the fastest providers of DBS checks in the UK. With over 20 years of experience and more than 14,000 clients, APCS processes over 125,000 criminal record checks annually.
Their system is electronically connected to the DBS, ensuring the fastest possible results and helping care providers speed up their recruitment processes.
About the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
The DBS is an executive non-departmental public body of the Home Office. It helps employers make suitable recruitment decisions by carrying out criminal record checks, allowing care providers to safeguard their organisations and prevent unsuitable candidates from working with vulnerable people.
For more information on the DBS, visit their official website.
DBS Checks in the Care Sector
The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, specifically Regulation 19, requires care providers to ensure that all staff are of good character and have the necessary qualifications, skills, and experience for their roles. DBS checks are a crucial part of this process.
What Level of DBS Check is Required?
For most roles in care settings, an Enhanced DBS certificate with barred list information is required, as the majority of staff will be engaging in regulated activity. This applies to anyone who:
- Provides personal care or healthcare to service users
- Has regular, unsupervised contact with service users
- Manages or supervises those who provide care
For other staff who have an opportunity for contact with service users but are not engaging in regulated activity, an Enhanced DBS certificate without a barred list check may be appropriate.
DBS Check Levels and Barred List Checks Explained
- Basic: Reveals any unspent convictions and conditional cautions. Suitable for roles that don’t involve working with vulnerable groups or in regulated activity. Can be requested by individuals or employers.
- Enhanced: This check provides information about convictions and cautions held on the Police National Computer (PNC), including spent convictions (with some exceptions). It may also include any additional information held by local police that is reasonably considered relevant to the role being applied for.
- Enhanced with barred list check: This includes all of the above, plus a check against the appropriate DBS barred list(s) (children, adults, or both, depending on the role).
CareAdmin simplifies the process of managing these checks, helping you stay compliant with CQC requirements and ensuring the safety of your service users.
